Pantelleria: the estate, the vineyards and the wine | Donnafugata

PANTELLERIA

Pantelleria is a volcanic island sculpted by the wind where the vines are hardy and grow low down. Here, viticulture is a combination of the power of the elements and the slow and methodical actions of man.

The Estate

The island of the sun and wind

Attracted by the allure of this rugged and magnetic land, our journey in Pantelleria began in 1989. Here, the viticulture is described as heroic: the Pantelleria “alberello” head-trained bush practice, inscribed on the UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage, has grown thanks to artisan work that adapts to the nature of the island. This challenge produces wines of a pure and vibrant energy.

HIGHLIGHTS

The richness of the terroir is the result of time-honoured and methodical practices. The architecture of the terraces, the warmth of the volcanic rock and the pruning just above the soil form a mosaic in which people learn from the landscape, stone by stone.
This is joined by a tangible commitment to the biodiversity of the island: from the Giardino Pantesco (Pantellerian Garden) donated to the FAI to the Cammino di Khamma nature trail among the Mediterranean maquis and vineyards in the heart of Pantelleria National Park.

Grape varieties

Zibibbo

In Pantelleria, every district has a precise identity that transforms the character of the grapes. It is fascinating to see how a single variety can express itself in such contrasting ways: from the vineyards 20 metres above the sea, which absorb the sapidity of the salt, to those at 400 metres, where the climate is cool and the hinterland makes itself known.

Zibibbo is an aromatic grape variety which originated in North Africa before subsequently spreading across the Mediterranean basin. The name Zibibbo is similar to the Arabic “Zabīb”, which means dry grape. In the warm, arid and windy climate of this island of volcanic origin, the Zibibbo, grown using the “alberello” head-trained bush method, has the perfect conditions to develop a concentration of sugars and olfactory notes that have no equal. It is used to produce aromatic dry wines and perfectly balanced dessert wines, such as Passito di Pantelleria.

PERHAPS YOU DIDN’T KNOW

The time-honoured legacy of the terraces

The gusts of wind that blow across the steep terraces are braved by seven hectares of heritage olive trees. We also preserve the ancient Biancolilla variety with horizontal branch training, keeping the crowns just over a metre in height. This painstaking process together with the strictly manual and very low yield harvest produces a delicate extra virgin olive oil that perfectly encapsulates the untamed character of the island.

Feeling at home

In Pantelleria, time follows the rhythms of the island. Among the black rock, the blue sea and the green Mediterranean maquis, the estate is a vibrant place where every visit is an exploration of the land and its flavours.

Etna

Our vineyards on Etna grow on vibrant soil, absorbing an energy that only an active volcano can generate. More than just wine, it is the power of a land that never sleeps.

Contessa Entellina

In the heart of western Sicily, the Contessa Entellina Estate is a magical place where art, history and nature blend into one to write our story.

Vittoria

Suspended between the geometries of the Hyblaean Plateau and the sea breeze, the Vittoria Estate is a place where the landscape expresses itself in elegant and eye-catching reds.
